Intimate Dermatology Unit

At our Intimate Dermatology Unit we deal with the diagnosis and treatment of all those skin diseases that affect the genitals. As well as with the recovery of intimate well-being for women.

Some skin diseases can affect the genitals. It is the dermatologist who is specialised in their diagnosis and treatment.

Likewise, dermatologists are specialised in venereology. In other words, those pathologies that are transmitted by sexual contact.

This is why at the Intimate Dermatology Unit we deal with all those skin or venereal diseases that affect the pubic, perineal and anal areas of both men and women.

For our female patients, at this specialised unit we also offer treatments aimed at the recovery of their intimate well-being.

Sexually transmitted diseases

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, with 70 to 80% of the sexually active population being infected. In fact, according to data from the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, every year between 3,500 and 4,000 new cases of HPV infection are diagnosed in Spain.

It is followed, in the list of most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), by infections from chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea, genital herpes or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Diseases that are contracted, in more than 50% of cases, amongst young people aged between 20 and 35 years old.

One of the main problems of these diseases is that in many cases they do not present symptoms and, therefore, there are not always visible skin lesions.

Since there is no treatment that eradicates the Human Papillomavirus, the most important thing is prevention (vaccines), and gynaecological and/or dermatological controls so that when its clinical manifestations appear there is the possibility of action and the control of its replication.

Human Papillomavirus is manifested by the appearance of anogenital warts (condylomata acuminata), precancerous lesions (dysplasias) and carcinomas in both women and men.

It should be remembered that, although condoms protect effectively in fluid-borne STDs, they only protect partially in the case of Human Papillomavirus. In other words, a person may be infected by the virus even if there is no penetration, but there is skin-to-skin contact, skin-to-mucosa or mucosa-to-mucosa.

Our Intimate Dermatology Unit specialises in the treatment of all manifestations deriving from infection by the Human Papillomavirus, as well as other sexually transmitted diseases.

Intimate and aesthetic well-being in women

It is no secret that women are increasingly concerned about aesthetics and intimate well-being, in addition to wanting to improve their sexual satisfaction.

The truth is that the passing of the years and the arrival of perimenopause and menopause often alter the female genital aesthetic and cause functional changes that are uncomfortable such as dryness of the mucosa, itching and tension throughout the genital area.

However, intimate aesthetics and the improvement of sex life is a concern that also occurs increasingly in young women.

The aesthetics of the genitals, the atrophy of the labia majora, can be affected by age, after significant weight loss or pregnancy, whilst episotomy scars from childbirth can cause tension and some medications such as oral isotretinoin (to treat severe acne) can cause dryness in the mucosa of the intimate area.

There are also young women who have overcome cancer and who, as a result of cancer treatment, suffer hormonal changes that cause them inconvenience and discomfort.

Currently, at this Intimate Dermatology Unit of IDERMA, we carry out treatments with specific hyaluronic acid to rehydrate and recover the comfort of the intimate area, as well as to remodel the labia majora and the mount of Venus.

Thanks to these intimate aesthetic treatments, firmness and turgidity are restored to the pubis and labia majora and the genital mucosa is hydrated, thanks to the hydrating effect of hyaluronic acid. In turn, they allow you to feel the area rejuvenated again and free from dryness, itching and tension.

What's more, the enlarged labia majora better protect the inner area from possible infections or fungi and, in turn, improve sexual relations and boost women's self-esteem.
